Mums’ training pays off
Three mums from Matamata came third in the women’s team event at the Tauranga Half Ironman on Saturday.
The Keen to Tri team made up of Kazuko Tapper, Helene Morton and Sue Hancock had previously won their first race – the women’s team event in the shorter Tinman race in December – and were looking to do well in the longer distance of a Half Ironman against stronger competition.
In hot and windy conditions, Kazuko swam the 2km swim leg, Helene cycled 90km and Sue ran 21km, in a total team time of 5h 2m, just seven metres behind the much younger winning team.
Each of the women has been training hard over the summer break.
