Frying Waikato under fire ban
Farmers are being urged not to light fires while the Waikato region swelters and farmers pray for rain.
Scrub and bush fires have got out of hand this month, including at Waingaro, Orini and Taupo in the region, and in other parts of the country.
Federated Farmers Waikato president James Houghton urged everyone in the region to be sensible with water use, ‘‘ particularly around town’’.
Northern New Zealand, including the Waikato and Coromandel, might get little to no rain at all until February.
