Swimmer wows all

Matamata Chronicle - - News - By NICOLA STEWART

Olympic swimmer Matthew Stanley was back in Matamata over the weekend, fresh from a win at the Brian Perry Waikato Regional Sports Awards.

The 21- year- old, who was named Junior Sportsman of the Year, was here to compete in the annual Matamata Swim Meet.

After winning the major prize in the men’s skins race, he spent time signing autographs and taking photos with young fans.

In the skins event, swimmers race 50 metres every two minutes, with swimmers eliminated until the winner is left.

Another Matamata swimmer, James Raymond, was the winner of the boys’ skins race.

Swim Matamata president Karen Raymond said this year’s meet attracted swimmers from across Waikato, Bay of Plenty, Auckland and even Australia.

Support from local businesses meant they were able to put up cash prizes to appeal to Olympic-level swimmers such as Stanley, she said.

A number of parents, volunteers and members of the community also helped to make the day a success.

See page 24 for more photos from the Matamata Swim Meet.
