Waterless fire team trains on

Matamata Chronicle - - Opinion/news -

Two teams from the Matamata Volunteer Fire Brigade will compete at the National Fire Fighting Championships in Cromwell on March 15 and 16.

Six firefighters have been training with coach Warren Feek for the last few months but for the last three weeks training sessions have been a little different.

Since water levels in the town have been nearing critical, the firefighters have made the call to practice without water.

Mr Feek said training with no water made it extremely difficult to know where they stand but it was important to set a good example for the town.

‘‘We wouldn’t want people to see us out training with a lot of water when the water levels are so low,’’ he said.

A team of two and a team of four will compete at Whitianga on March 2 before heading to the nationals.

The top four teams will then go on to compete in Australia for the Australasian title.
