Awards boost busi­ness per­for­mance

By FLORENCE KERR Toko­roa sharemilk­ers Mark and Cathy Ni­cholas credit the Waikato Dairy Awards for help­ing im­prove their busi­ness per­for­mance.

The hus­band-and-wife team was an­nounced as a fi­nal­ist in the Waikato Dairy Awards Sharemilker/ Eq­uity Farmer of the Year cat­e­gory.

“We have been in­volved with th­ese awards for a few years and value it as an in­te­gral part of our busi­ness. It’s a great way for us to gauge where we are at with our busi­ness and ar­eas that may need im­prove­ment,” says Mr Ni­cholas.

The cou­ple and their two daugh­ters, along with em­ployee Roy­don Mar­shall, sharemilk 285 cows on Al­bie and Bar­bara Kut­tel’s farm in Toko­roa.

The cou­ple also pay homage to their em­ploy­ers and the ru­ral com­mu­nity for their sup­port.

“Al­bie and Bar­bara have been fan­tas­tic em­ploy­ers for the past four years. We would also like to thank fam­ily and friends as well as Tony and Ali Van Der Hey­den who were our first em­ploy­ers; they are an in­te­gral part of where we are to­day,” Mr Ni­cholas says.

The Ni­cholas’ are also hum­ble about their past achieve­ments with Mark win­ning the NZ Dairy Trainee of the year in 2009 and the cou­ple plac­ing third in the Waikato Dairy Awards in 2010. They also credit Dairy Base and Dairy Push for help­ing im­prove their busi­ness as a whole.

“It’s a team ef­fort,” he says. “We get a lot of help from the ru­ral com­mu­nity, which is a great net­work to be in­volved with.”
