Matamata Chronicle - - News -

On show: Matamata’s Ballymore Stable had a steady stream of visitors on Friday for its first ever open day. One of the main attractions was racehorse Xcellent, affectionately known as Stanley. Xcellent won six races from his first nine career starts, including four Group Ones – the New Zealand Derby, the New Zealand Stakes, the Mudgway Stakes and Kelt Capital Stakes. He also ran third in the Melbourne Cup in 2005. He was only defeated once in New Zealand racing and retired in 2008 after damaging a tendon in his foot. After seeing some of the stable’s top horses, a fashion show was put on for the ladies and the men retired to play golf. Pictured is Xcellent with Ballymore employee Claire Rayner.
