Matamata Chronicle - - News -

It was a battle of The Lord of the Rings variety last week when a piece of Matamata history went up for auction.

The town’s prized Gollum statue, which spent years watching over Broadway, was sold to a Hamilton bidder for $900.

The auction attracted a lot of attention, stacking up more than 8000 page views and featuring on the site’s Cool Auctions page.

Gollum was sold as part of an insurance claim after being extensively damaged by vandals in October 2010.

The Matamata Public Relations Association has replaced him with a 170kg bronze Gollum statue from Sir Peter Jackson’s Weta Workshop.

The new statue is located inside the i-SITE Gatehouse.

Sold: Matamata’s original Gollum statue was sold on online auction site Trade Me.
