Com­mu­nity minded Keas flock to road­sides

Mata­mata’s Kea Scouts went on a trea­sure hunt of sorts along Cen­ten­nial Drive on Thurs­day. The young­sters man­aged to turn an af­ter­noon of pick­ing up rub­bish into a bit of an ad­ven­ture.

Lead­ers Cathy O’Cal­laghan and Anna Mis­chef­ski said they were work­ing to­wards their Sil­ver Kea Awards by help­ing the com­mu­nity.

The boys were fresh from an overnight camp at Camp Gow in Wal­ton, where they made rock­ets, raced down mud­slides, went eel­ing and had a camp fire.

Kea Scouts is for 5 to 7-year-olds and is a pre-cur­sor to cubs and scouts.

Ad­ven­turer: Six-year-old Wil­liam MacKen­zie went in search of rub­bish up a tree.
