Sixty years after training his first puppy, Allan Smith is still chasing the title of national sheep dog trial champion.

The 74-year-old retired farmer has never missed a season and is set to compete at the North Island and New Zealand Championships next week.

His dogs Nick, Dot and Mac have all qualified and Allan said the pups are as good as he has had.

Allan, who joined the PutaruruTirau- Matamata Sheep Dog Trial Club in 1978, has finished second at the North Island Championships twice and finished in the top seven at nationals a number of times.

Earlier this season, he won the Waikato Centre Champs and hopes to this year bring the New Zealand title home to Matamata.

Allan sold his Hinuera sheep and beef farm in 2005 and now has three acres, some sheep and his dogs.

Five hundred dogs from the North Cape to the Bluff will compete at the nationals from May 27 to June 1.

Members of the public are welcome to attend the event held at OrakieKorako Rd in Taupo.

Good boy: Allan Smith’s heading dog Nick will be competing at the sheep dog trial nationals next week.
