Shot of a lifetime

Matamata Chronicle - - News -

Two young netball fans were at the heart of the thrilling on-court action, flying the flags of the Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic and Central Pulse in a game that saw the Magic emerge winners in a close 53-49 victory.

Alana Sankey, 11, and Alexandra Gothorp, 12, who both won the opportunity in the ANZ Future Captains competition, met captains Laura Langman and Katrina Grant before joining the two teams on court for the opening of the game.

Alana, a student at Matamata Intermediate School, said she felt a mixture of nerves and excitement before walking out on court.

‘‘It was a bit scary waiting in the stands before the carrying the flag but it ended up being really fun.

‘‘I got heaps of texts from friends who saw me on TV.

‘‘Iit was pretty unreal actually seeing the Magic up close – they’re really tall.’’

Head of sponsorship at ANZ Susan McGregor said it was a once-in-alifetime experience for the fans.

‘‘We’re giving 62 kids from around the country the experience to become an ANZ Future Captain.

‘‘ It’s a thrilling opportunity for young netballers to meet their heroes and be part of the ANZ Championship, a tournament they may even compete in in the future.’’
