Anna’s quick snap wins
Catching a photo of an old shed from a moving car has earned Matamata College student Anna Watkins a tidy sum of prize money.
The 16-year-old has been awarded best photo and overall winner at the Metso Art Awards at the Wallace Gallery in Morrinsville.
Her photo The Desert Road Shed was taken on a stretch of road near Gore while on a trip around the South Island.
‘‘We were driving past it so I just took a picture as we went past,’’ she said.
‘‘It didn’t seem like something you would typically see in New Zealand, that’s why I liked it.’’
It was the first time she has entered the awards so it was a surprise when she was named overall winner, she said.
Sixteen-year-old Louise Cressy was also a first time entrant and won the painting category with A String of Letterboxes.
It was a last minute effort after she decided to enter the competition two days before the submission date. ‘‘It took me maybe a day and a half to paint it,’’ she said. ‘‘I was really surprised when I won.’’ Metso has sponsored the awards since 1997 and after it closes in December, local Angus Robson has agreed to support the project till a new business sponsor is secured.
Metso managing director Keith Cooke said it had been a pleasure being involved in the awards over the years.
‘‘It never ceases to amaze me that each year is so different,’’ he said.
‘‘The artworks would sit very nicely on any wall, the students have a right to be proud of them.’’
It was the second time the entries have been displayed at Wallace Gallery and director Leah Murphy said they were always well received.
‘‘We display them during the Matamata Piako Festival of Arts so we have thousands of people come through,’’ she said.
‘‘All the visitors are really surprised at the age group of the students.
‘‘It’s really nice.’’
