More medals for spir­ited twis­ters at gym­sports

Four Mata­mata In­ter­me­di­ate stu­dents are stack­ing up the medals af­ter a win at the Waikato Re­gional Gym­sports Fes­ti­val.

Madi­son Swap, Gabrielle Raynel, An­nalese Temm and Char­lotte Chittick won first place in the novice twister grade at the event.

Char­lotte was also named over­all in­di­vid­ual win­ner and An­nalese was fourth over­all.

‘‘I like gym­nas­tics be­cause it’s chal­leng­ing,’’ said Char­lotte.

The team was one of 15 in their grade and qual­i­fied for the event af­ter win­ning the novice twis­ters grade at the Hamil­ton Gym­sports Fes­ti­val. They also won in­di­vid­ual awards and were cho­sen as the team with the best spirit at that event.

Coach Gay­ma­ree Steiner said the team had other sport­ing com­mit­ments and were only able to prac­tise once a week.

‘‘They have done re­ally, re­ally well,’’ she said. ‘‘I’m re­ally proud of them.’’ The girls com­peted in floor, beam and vault events, with the top three in­di­vid­ual scores counted to­wards the team to­tal.

The Waikato Fes­ti­val was held in Hamil­ton.
