Goats as pets are just great for kids

Matamata Chronicle - - News -

Sarai and Kelsey Gold have been busy taking care of their new pets Freckles and Molly. The Matamata Primary students are among hundreds of children across Matamata taking part in the annual calf club season.

The sisters have had kid goats every year since they were old enough but it is the first time having a lamb for sixyear-old Kelsey.

‘‘I like them because they’re nice and fluffy,’’ she said.

Mum Marie Bryant said looking after an animal was a good experience for school children.

‘‘They have to get out there and look after them,’’ she said.

‘‘It’s good for them to have that responsibility.’’

Sarai, 9, said it was really fun looking after a goat. She has to feed and brush Freckles every day, as well as practising to lead and call her.

The girls have a collection of ribbons from past years and will take their animals to their school calf club day, the Matamata A&P Show and Matamata Group Day.

‘‘We enjoy going around all the shows,’’ Ms Bryant said. ‘‘Goats are a lot of fun . . . there are always a few tears when we have to take them back.’’
