Raised bed gives lift to garden

Digging in: The Matamata Community Garden continues to grow with the addition of one raised garden.

A group of special helpers built their own raised garden and plan to grow vegetables and flowers.

The raised garden has been specifically designed so people in wheelchairs can also tend to the plants.

Beryl McGurk, from Intellectual Disability Empowerment in Action (IDEA) services said this type of activity helped the group to feel valued and involved in the community.

‘‘It’s going to be great. We can go down there once or twice a week and have picnics and watch our garden grow,’’ Beryl said.

The Matamata IHC committee funded all materials needed for the project.

The garden behind the Union Parish on Peria Rd is open to all Matamata residents.
