Biggest show in town is back
One hundred shows later and the event that ‘‘brings the country to town’’ is still fun for the whole family.
The Matamata A&P Association will celebrate their centennial show on Saturday, October 5, and it’s shaping up to be a grand affair.
Executive committee member Kimberley Swap said that while this is a modern event, it still holds true to the pioneers who founded the show.
The first show was held on Thursday, March 30, 1911 and was held at the Matamata Saleyards.
Matamata’s first Spring show was held on October 13, 1962 at the request of the Jersey Cattle Breeders.
‘‘Our sponsors get behind the show each year and we are very grateful for their support,’’ Mrs Swap said.
The show is now held on private land at 129 Station Rd in Matamata.
