Cup sponsorship taken to new level
Major fertiliser company Wealleans has taken its sponsorship of the Team Wealleans Matamata Cup Day up a notch.
In addition to its normal level of sponsorship, this year the company has put up an added bonus for starters who place outside the top three. Owners who have horses place fourth to second-to-last in the Team Wealleans Matamata Cup race will receive a $500 bonus.
The owner of the horse that comes in last will receive a bottle of Mills Reef wine.
The feature race is limited to 16 runners and the $500 starter incentive will take the stakes to a total of $56,000.
Matamata Racing Club vicepresident Dennis Ryan said the move was inspired by the bonus system in Singapore and was a show of commitment from Wealleans.
‘‘It’s an indication of Weallean’s massive support for racing and of Matamata Racing Club as well,’’ he said.
Wealleans Groundspread and its associated companies sponsor numerous races across the Waikato and Bay of Plenty and own a team of racehorses.
The Team Wealleans Matamata Cup, a listed stakes event raced over 1600 metres, is the largest single race that the company sponsors.
