Name: Age: Place of birth: Current occupation: What were you doing prior to coming to New Zealand?

Au Pair

I was a student and spent weekends working in an Italian restaurant.

What brought you to New Zealand?

I always wanted to leave home after graduation. I wanted to extend my experiences, see new countries, learn about new cultures and have a little adventure on my own. For me it is an important step to becoming an adult.

What brought you to Matamata?

I did not choose Matamata; what I chose was my host family. When I got the family’s letter I knew that THIS is where want to spent my next half-year.

What’s your favourite thing about New Zealand?

I really like the people here. Everybody is very open and friendly, so it soon felt like home which was great for me! What I also like is the nature of course – it is amazing!

What’s your favourite thing about Matamata?

The community. I got to know a lot of people through the Playcentre and my host-mother.

I’ve had the chance to meet new people, make new experiences and feel a part of the community.

What do you miss most about home?

My family, boyfriend and friends. I also miss German food, especially German bread.

What do you plan to do once you return home?

I want to become a pediatric nurse. My life with the children here supports that path.

Who’s your favourite Kiwi celebrity?

I really like Richie McCaw! Rugby is not that famous in Germany and I was so impressed by the Haka and the good-looking rugby players.

Tell me one interesting thing about your country:

I’m from the southern part of Germany, which is generally more stereotypically German. For example, we celebrate Oktoberfest and typical meals for our region include sauerkraut and bratwurst and, of course, schnitzel which you have with good German beer.
