Rain fails to dampen cup day spir­its

Show­ers fell heavy and of­ten at the Team Weal­leans Mata­mata Cup Day but it wasn’t enough to keep the race­go­ers away.

Crowds of pun­ters filled the lounges at Mata­mata Rac­ing Club on Satur­day and chil­dren closed out their school hol­i­days with a day at the races.

It was a top day of rac­ing, with Cam­bridge ap­pren­tice Alex Forbes bring­ing In­no­va­tion home to win the $ 50,000 Team Weal­leans Mata­mata Cup.

Own­ers of the horses that came fourth to sec­ond to last in the fea­ture race took home $500 each as part of a starter bonus of­fered by Weal­leans.

Ni­cola Stewart was at the track.
