School damaged, names wanted

Matamata Chronicle - - News - By NICOLA STEWART

Police are seeking information on a group of teenagers who threw a bench through a window at Matamata Intermediate on Saturday night.

Witnesses saw about eight people in their late teens hanging out on the school grounds between 9.30pm and 11.30pm.

Constable Dale Drake said they appeared to be drinking and caused a considerable amount of damage to school property.

One window was smashed using a tree stake, the glass from a classroom door was broken and a second classroom door had a bench thrown through it.

The bench was still in the glass panel the next morning.

The glass was all reinforced and would be expensive to repair, Mr Drake said.

Newly-planted gardens were destroyed and soccer goal posts that the school had fundraised to pay for were snapped and pulled over.

The astroturf on the school cricket pitch was also pulled up. Empty alcohol cans were left behind. Mr Drake would like to talk to anyone who saw or heard anything relating to the damage.

He also encouraged parents of teenagers to ask their children if they knew anything about it.

‘‘We just need one name then we can work it out,’’ he said.

You can contact Mr Drake at the Matamata Police Station on 888 7117 or leave information anonymously with Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
