An 18-year-old Matamata woman has appeared in court after allegedly stabbing a man in the stomach with a hunting knife.

The man underwent surgery at Waikato Hospital for his injuries.

Sergeant Graham McGurk said people were drinking at a birthday party at a Farmers Rd address last Wednesday night.

There was a domestic incident between the woman and her boyfriend, and he left the property.

She then got into an argument with another man at the property and allegedly stabbed him in the stomach just after 8.30pm.

‘‘There was a brief struggle and then he fell to the ground,’’ said Mr McGurk.

Other people at the property, who were not involved, called an ambulance and tried to keep the woman at the house, but she managed to escape.

Police located her at 6am the next morning and she was arrested and charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

She appeared in Hamilton District Court on Thursday.
