Check point finds cannabis

Po­lice dis­cov­ered al­most a kilo­gram of cannabis con­cealed in a car af­ter the driver was stopped at a rou­tine check point in Mata­mata.

The Waikato booze bus was set up near town on Fri­day night when a Tau­ranga man was stopped for a breath al­co­hol test.

Sergeant Gra­ham McGurk said his car smelt strongly of mar­i­juana and af­ter a brief search a small amount of cannabis was found.

Mata­mata staff then did a com­plete search of the car and nearly 1kg of dried cannabis was found.

The 37-year-old man was ar­rested for pos­ses­sion of cannabis for sup­ply and was taken into cus­tody in Hamil­ton. He was to ap­pear in the Hamil­ton Dis­trict Court on Mon­day.
