Let’s put some sparkle back into our town
The Bayleys Christmas Lights competition is changing.
The Bayleys team have been disappointed over the last couple of years that Matamata is slowly losing its spark.
They have decided, along with the Matamata Chronicle, to embrace the Christmas season and have joined forces with Matamata Mitre 10 to reinvent the competition and make it the first annual Bayleys Christmas Lights Tour.
Bayleys Matamata, along with Mitre 10 and the Chronicle, invite residents to untangle their Christmas lights and make their homes twinkle.
Any resident or business is welcome to register to be included on the tour map and will automatically go in the draw to win a $300 Mitre 10 voucher.
Matamata Mitre 10 are generously offering all entrants a 15 per cent discount off their extensive Christmas lights range, which includes solar powered lights.
A map of the Christmas Lights Tour will appear in the Chronicle on Wednesday, December 18.
Chronicle manager Milly Keys said it was an event the whole community could take part in – as an entrant or a spectator.
‘‘It’s a really good tradition . . . hop in the car with the kids, drive around the town and have a look at the Christmas lights.
‘‘We really want to see the spirit of Christmas come back.’’
Organisers hoped taking the competition out of it and replacing it with a community event for everyone to enjoy would spur more entries.
Margaret Troughton and her team at Bayleys Matamata are taking it one step further this year too.
‘‘We will be purchasing some solar lights and lighting up the tree outside our office. It would be fantastic if other businesses wanted to jump on and do the same. In fact I would like to challenge other businesses to do it.
‘‘Let’s come together and light up our town.’’
You don’t have to spend the earth to get a good light show.
A decorated Christmas tree in the window will bring joy to those who take the tour.
To register your home for the Bayleys Christmas lights tour, look out in next week’s Chronicle for all the details.
