Callout a hoax

Matamata Chronicle - - News - By NICOLA STEWART

Matamata’s volunteer fire fighters were attacked with fireworks after a fake callout to Te Kura o Waharoa.

Chief fire officer Kevin Curtis said they responded to reports of a vegetation fire at the school on Guy Fawkes Night.

They arrived to find no signs of a fire and were instead set upon by people shooting fireworks at the responding appliances.

No fire fighters were hurt and the trucks were undamaged but Mr Curtis said it had the potential to be far more serious. ‘‘I believe we were set up,’’ he said. ‘‘For what reason, we don’t know. I am extremely disappointed in the way we have been targeted. As fire fighters, we face enough dangerous situations without irresponsible residents ambushing us.’’

Police were called but the offenders had gone when they arrived a short time later.

If anyone knows anything about this incident please call police on 888 7117 or anonymously Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
