Driver fell asleep, hit a fence

Matamata Chronicle - - News -

Close call: Matamata police said the three occupants of this car are lucky to be alive after they smashed into a post and rail fence. The car was heading east on State Highway 29, near the intersection with State Highway 1, on Sunday when the driver fell asleep at the wheel. When the front seat passenger realised, he shouted, causing the driver to wake up and swerve hard to the left. The car skidded across the grass and gravel, then crossed back over the centre line, slamming into a fence. A rail from the fence was forced through the windscreen and out the rear window, causing moderate injuries to a passenger sitting in the back seat. She was taken to Waikato Hospital by ambulance. A post also broke through the windscreen, narrowly missing the driver. Sergeant Graham McGurk said it was a reminder of the dangers of driving while tired.
