Sought after prize for grabs again

Matamata Chronicle - - Breeders’ Stakes -

Once again all roads will lead to Matamata racecourse this Saturday for the J Swap Contractors Matamata Breeders’ Stakes race meeting.

The Matamata Racing Club’s annual premier fixture is important not only to the local racing fraternity but to the whole community as the best in racetrack action, fashion and entertainment is showcased in what is recognised as an iconic day on the New Zealand racing calendar.

The Matamata Breeders’ Stakes race dates back to 1969 when a seed of an idea saw it grow quickly in status to become the country’s most prestigious contest for twoyear-old fillies. With a Group Two rating and a stake of $100,000, the J Swap Contractors Matamata Breeders’ Stakes is a sought after prize for the best juvenile fillies from around the country, as reflected in a starstudded roll of honour.

Saturday’s programme also features the $50,000 Reid & Harrison Slipper for two-year-old colts and geldings and the $50,000 Marks Ewen & Associates Kaimai Stakes, an important lead-up to the Auckland Cup and other autumn staying features.

Total stakes on the day amount to $360,000, ensuring high quality fields across an exciting nine-race card.

The role of sponsors in ensuring the success of Matamata Breeders’ Stakes day – and indeed all 13 race meetings staged annually by the Matamata Racing Club – cannot be overstated.

While difficult to single out one sponsor ahead of all others, the contribution by J Swap Contractors in their under-writing of the club’s flagship race deserves special acknowledgment.

Along with that annual commitment, this year is special as it marks the 100th birthday of the matriarch of the Swap family, Mrs Sadie Swap.

A remarkable woman, Sadie sets an example for us all and we will take great pleasure in hosting Sadie and family on the special day.

Breeders’ Stakes day isn’t only about racing, with the annual Tuscany Road Fashion in the Field, children’s entertainment, and an excellent range of raceday packages, making for an occasion not to be missed.

I therefore invite you to come along this Saturday and enjoy all that J Swap Contractors Matamata Breeders’ Stakes day has to offer.

Iconic: The J Swap Contractors Matamata Breeders’ Stakes draws crowds of thousands as one of the premiere events in New Zealand racing.
