Long shot comes in for one lucky punter

Matamata Chronicle - - Breeders’ Stakes - By NICOLA STEWART

Matamata print worker Graham Wellington is about as lucky as they come.

At the last J Swap Contractors Matamata Breeders’ Stakes he left with a brand new Ford Falcon XR6 and a 50-inch flatscreen TV.

The odds were almost insurmountable.

To win, he had to pick the horse to win the feature race, have his name drawn, then pick the correct envelope out of 100.

He chose envelope No 71 and to everyone’s amazement – he won. ‘‘I was so shocked. ‘‘I was a bit stunned really,’’ Mr Wellington said.

‘‘No one even knew what to do when I won because no one ever had before.’’

He had driven past the car the week before and joked to his wife and co-workers that he would win it.

He even had the No 71 all ready, just in case.

‘‘I had thought about it that week and I knew if I had the chance I would pick that number,’’ Mr Wellington said.

It has been a year since he drove away in the car from Fairview Motors Matamata and he is still buzzing about it.

It has been on a few road trips, including one to Whakapapa ski field at Ruapehu, and all around the Coromandel Peninsula.

‘‘It’s been very nice to drive . . . love the cruise control in it,’’ he said.

It wasn’t the first lucky break for Mr Wellington.

In fact, he has won three separate trips away through other competitions.

On the radio, he won a mystery weekend to Christchurch, then an all-expenses paid trip to Brisbane to see the All Blacks in action. He also won flights to Sydney through the TAB. To top it off, on the same day he won the car and the TV from ToneZone, he bought his mother-inlaw a Lotto ticket that won her $2000.

‘‘I guess I have been pretty lucky,’’ he said.

Punters at this year’s Breeders’ Stakes will once again have the chance to win a new Ford Falcon XR6 and a big screen TV.

Lucky one: Matamata resident Graham Wellington was the winner of the Ford Falcon XR6 at last year’s Breeders’ Stakes.
