Dust not settled on arena issue

Matamata Chronicle - - News - By MEREANA AUSTIN Wintec journalism student

It is not all sunshine and roses for neighbours on Haig Rd.

Resident Leanne West put a sand horse riding arena on her property before Christmas 2011 and is frustrated at continued complaints from her neighbours.

Both Mrs West and the Matamata-Piako District Council have received several complaints from two separate households about dust from the arena.

Mrs West said she has endeavoured to keep dust to a minimum, even installing an irrigation system to dampen the sand.

However, she is unable to use the system when council water restrictions are in place and believes this is when the complaints have been made.

‘‘Yes, without the irrigation system on, there is dust in my arena,’’ Mrs West said.

The Matamata Chronicle approached several Haig Rd residents but they declined to comment, preferring to leave the matter up to the council.

Mrs West said she rang the council before the construction of the arena to see if she needed any permits.

‘‘I was told no because I wasn’t building anything, and I also rang the council building inspector to make sure,’’ she said.

Her daughter Sarah,

12,

is a competitive show rider and needs to practice every day.

‘‘The reason I put the arena right beside my house is because my youngest daughter Amy (8) is mentally and physically disabled and this way it is easy for me to supervise both of my daughters.

‘‘I think there needs to be some tolerance. I’m not breaking any rules.’’

The Matamata-Piako District Council said any complaints made were investigated by a monitoring officer.

Mrs West’s property was assessed and the Waikato Regional Council was consulted as they had also received a complaint.

While the district plan requires that dust discharge is minimised, the primary responsibility for discharges to air lies with the regional council.

They have confirmed they are investigating the issue on Haig Rd and are looking into any possible solutions.

Matamata-Piako District Council said one option Mrs West had was to use a water tanker filled from an authorised source such as a bore.
