Abandoned kayak washes up

Matamata Chronicle - - Opinion/news -

Scott Donaldson’s doned kayak has found.

Donaldson 44, tried to cross the Tasman alone in a kayak in July but quit just 74 kilometres off the Taranaki coast after he suffered head and chest injuries and weather conditions deteriorated.

His kayak was located on a beach at an Oeo farm in South Taranaki about 1pm on August 27.

Farmer Troy Stevenson said he had seen a helicopter land at the beach and had gone down for a look.

People in the helicopter abanbeen spotted the kayak, he said.

He said the kayak had ‘‘Double Ditch’’, the name of Donaldson’s crossing attempt, written on the side.
