Opening day at Waharoa Speedway on Sunday started with the hiss and roar of the usual mini stocks, saloons and sprintcars and also the fascinating gokarts.

The speedway clerk of the course, Damien Laird, said it was fascinating watching the gokarts zoom round the dirt track.

‘‘ They have a dirt track in Te Aroha so they are used to dirt but of course some fared better than others because a little bump in the track is a big bump to those guys,’’ he said.

The gokarters have been taking part in Waharoa Speedway events since last year.

Laird hopes that they will become a regular part of the program this season.

The mini stock class had plenty of entries as they had already started their racing season.

The Waharoa Speedway Club wants to see more people at the track where they can kick back and relax while watching some great motorsport, Laird said.

The next event at Waharoa Speedway will be in a fortnight.
