Leading the choir in song

Matamata Chronicle - - News - By TERESA HATTAN

Being the apprentice conductor for this year’s Matamata Christmas Choir is a great opportunity, Natalie van der Goes says.

Van der Goes, who teaches during the day, has always had a passion for music. She has been involved with the Christmas choir for a number of years and said it was neat to be involved with people who have a lot of experience with both singing and music.

Van der Goes said getting to know new people was the best part about being involved with the choir. She was also learning a lot from experienced conductor David Qualtrough.

Bringing music to the community was also a great thing to be able to do, especially during the festive season, she said.

Van der Goes believed conducting looked relatively easy ‘‘but it’s really not’’.

‘‘It’s all about getting two hands going at the same time and doing different things. As you do it you get better and better, which is why I think this sort of opportunity is great,’’ she said.

In the past, van der Goes has also been involved in the band that supports the choir and has been a soloist.
