No open fire permits in restricted season

Matamata Chronicle - - News -

A restricted fire season is in place for the whole of the Matamata- Piako District, including Department of Conservation land. This means that fires in the open can only be lit with a permit, however, no permits are currently being issued.

Although some areas of the district are still reasonably green, the fire risk is rising rapidly. ‘‘ Dry weather is forecasted to continue for the district over the coming weeks and the fire risk will be very high,’’ Deputy Principal Rural Fire Officer, Mike van Bysterveldt, said.

Areas around rivers, streams and drain banks as well as around stands of trees and peat are very easy to catch on fire.
