Reduce water use now, pleads council

The Matamata-Piako District council says water use in Matamata and Te Poi still needs to drop.

‘‘We encourage people to water the garden on alternate days, even street numbers water on even days, and odd street numbers water on odd days,’’ the council’s communication adviser Adele Preston said.

Matamata moved to level two water restrictions on January 27.

Preston said it usually took a week or so for people to notice the new level of restrictions and then change their behaviour to reflect the change.

Matamata was on level four restrictions, the highest level in Matamata, in 2013. This meant there was a total watering ban.

‘‘If everyone conserves water wherever possible then hopefully we will not reach level four this summer,’’ Preston said.
