Matamata woman Janette Wills was thrilled to receive her Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit (ONZM) medal for services to the beef industry from the GovernorGeneral Sir Jerry Mateparae at a ceremony on May 20.

‘‘It was a very special day and the architecture of Government House really added to it.’’

Wills described it as ‘‘ overwhelming’’ to stand and listen to her citation being read out before receiving her medal with six of her family and friends looking on.

She said the Governor General was very friendly and spoke at length with each of the recipients and was well versed in why they had received an honour.

Wills felt the ceremony was very personal, as 25 people per day during the week-long event are given their award. Other recipients at her ceremony included the Honourable Graham Panckhurst, who was made a knight for services to the judiciary, and Professor Emeritus Gary Hermansson who gained the same award as Wills, but for services to the field of sport psychology.

Twice a year, the GovernorGeneral holds investiture ceremonies at Government House in Wellington and Government House in Auckland for the people named in the New Year and Queen’s Birthday honours lists.
