It was a plea­sure to read the obit­u­ary of Kerry McKin­ley where he was re­ferred to as Kerry us­ing his Chris­tian name, un­like the front page ar­ti­cle ‘‘Wills hon­oured with ONZM’’ [June 3, Mata­mata Chron­i­cle].

To me it was dis­re­spect­ful to call this lovely lady who had been hon­oured with the New Zealand Or­der of Merit, by her sur­name.

The first line tells me her name is Janette Wills but from there on she is re­ferred to as Wills.

I cringe ev­ery time I read a sur­name when you are re­fer­ring to a lady.
