Help at hand with Victim Support

Matamata Chronicle - - Welcome To Matamata -

No-one ever wants harm or ill to befall anyone, however it’s reassuring to know that when crime or trauma does strike, nearimmediate help is at hand in Matamata.

Victim Support has been operating in Matamata for 24 years – as well as in neighbouring towns Morrinsville and Te Aroha – and provides 24/7 crisis support for victims of crime and other emergencies.

Nationally, 95 per cent of Victim Support’s work is on referral from the police and includes supporting victims of trauma unrelated to crime, such as completed suicide, accidental death or Civil Defence emergency.

The organisation is staffed by trained and skilled volunteers who not only provide initial support, but also ongoing support where and when necessary. This may take the form of court support as victims deal with the justice system; organising victim grants; referrals to other agencies or providing advocacy, to name a few.

A registered charity, Victim Support has around 850 nationwide volunteers who, like their Matamata colleagues, are willing to turn out at any time day or night, 365 days of the year.

Victim Support can be contacted through the Matamata police station, 888 7117, or by calling 0800 842 846.
