Teachers plan tower run to raise leukaemia funds
A desire to help raise funds for Leukaemia NZ has led five Matamata Primary teachers to sign up for the Corporate Sky Tower Stair Challenge.
Two of the teachers, Hannah Bateman and Shanekea Butler are on the fundraising committee for Kate Diprose, a local seven year old who has had a relapse of acute lymphoblastic leukaemia. The teachers were also inspired to sign up for the event by other families in the school community affected by cancer.
The group, which also includes Gillian Hampton, Femke Piper and Mary Muckle, all said Hannah was the driver behind them getting involved in the running challenge.
They are preparing for the August 14 event by training at the gym individually, focusing on leg strength and stamina, as they need to be able to run 5 kilometres.
They will run up 51 flights of stairs, or 1103 individual steps in the Sky Tower.
‘‘You can’t hop in the lift halfway though,’’ Bateman said.
practising running up stairs around the area. The group will eventually train together. They say Gillian Hampton, who runs with the local Harriers club, is the fittest of the group.
They need to raise $5000 for the cancer group and run the risk of being disallowed from the event if they do not reach their goal before the event.
They would also really appreciate a local business sponsoring their T-shirts.
They say their principal Carolyn Osborne has been very supportive of the group, as they have signed up as the Matamata Primary team.
The school also ran a dressup day which raised $629.30 for the Diprose family.
The Corporate Sky Tower Stair Challenge will be held for the fourth time on August 14. The ‘vertical marathon’ will see 80 five-person corporate teams race up Auckland’s Sky Tower.
Last year’s event raised over $251,000 for Leukaemia & Blood Cancer New Zealand.
