UMS Senior B Matamata Directional Drilling/Pearson Engineering 10 Old Boys 41

UMS Senior B’s have been enjoying some very competitive matches throughout their season, but none more than Saturday’s game against a young and fit Old Boys outfit.

With several players out with commitments, the B’s stalwart Shanan Mowatt called up the troops.

There were certainly a few references to Dad’s Army and Jenny Craig, but their experience certainly rattled their younger opponents.

Right from the start the front row of Aliimatafitafi, Wilson and Wilcox took it up the middle and put their younger opponents on the back foot, dominating the rucks, mauls and scrums.

With Laiseni busting up the middle it allowed the other forwards of Douglas and Smart to make inroads.

It took well into the later parts of the first half for Old Boys to put points on the board. However, UMS had the last laugh before halftime with young gun Joey Ramsey running in a 80-metre try from a well timed intercept.

The halftime score of 5-26 did not change until the 67th minute mark and again at the 75th minute mark.

UMS then took the last few minutes to the Old Boys forward pack. Outsides Ramsey, Wilson and Te Patu took on their opposition with skill and balance, allowing front ball for Mowatt. A great try by Jordon Teringa resulted after the ball passed through 15 sets of hands.

This hasn’t been an easy season for the Bs, but they must be admired for their perseverance over the weeks.

At the aftermatch Mowatt made mention of the weight for age team on the field and applauded the efforts of the added additions.

Point scorers: Ramsey, J Teringa.
