COMAG Matamata College 1st XV travelled to Morrinsville on the weekend to take on Morrinsville College 1st XV. Playing into a strong breeze in the first half, Matamata were able to keep the ball in hand and build some phases. This led to two tries scored by winger Sireli Kuruduadua and prop Bradley Fountain. Jesse Holdsworth added a conversion, while Morrinsville kicked a penalty making the score 12-3 to Matamata at halftime.

With the breeze behind them in the second half, Matamata were able to dominate territory and possession. This led to four further tries scored by Kalino Hehea, Ben Brady, Tana Tuhakaraina and Bradley Fountain.

Fullback Jesse Holdsworth had a good day with the boot in tricky conditions, adding three further conversions, making the final score 38 to 3.

The Matamata scrum was solid once again and number 8 James Thompson was a standout performer, as was flanker Ben Brady and prop Bradley Fountain. Rhys Dickinson, Tana Tuhakaraina and Sireli Kuruduadua all had good games in the backs. The team would like to thank Matamata Physio for their ongoing support.

In other games, the 2nd XV had a good 20-7 win against Putaruru 1st XV. Lock Carl Tiddy carried the ball well and tackled hard, while Wesley Howse and Trent Williams also had good games in the forwards. Backs Kieran Holdsworth and Ben Ross were good.

The Under- 15s travelled to Otorohanga and were beaten 40-17. Owen Veltman was like an energiser bunny for Matamata and was all over the field, while James Raymond had an excellent work rate. Matamata never gave up and their final try was an awesome team effort with backs and forwards combining, ending with winger Braden Shelley scoring in the corner.

The Under- 14’ s had another win, 31-5 away against Tokoroa. It was Matamata’s best performance of the season with everyone playing well as a team. Dion O’Leary and Joell Poto were particularly good. Try scorers were Joell Poto (3), Kodie Wharapapa (2) while Malachi O’Brien and Josh Webber kicked a conversion each.

The Under-55kg team played HBHS Red in Hamilton and were beaten 24-5.
