Many hours of selfless hard work were recognised at the Matamata-Piako District Council 2015 Community Volunteer Awards in Waihou last week.

There were 37 volunteers from throughout the Matamata Piako district at the ceremony, which was held the week before National Volunteer Week.

District mayor Jan Barnes said the awards celebrated selfless work. ‘‘It takes a special kind of person to sacrifice their time and energy,’’ she said.

‘‘How rich our community is to have such an abundance of community support. The ability of people to work willingly together for the betterment of their community is a really valuable resource.’’

The awards were part of National Volunteer Week, which runs from June 21 to 27.
