United Matamata Sports (Reid and Harrison/ Waikato Stud) Senior A 30 Te Awamutu Sports 25

Matamata Chronicle - - Sport -

Those not present at Te Awamutu’s Albert Park over the weekend as Te Awamutu Sports hosted UMS in the first round of the promotion relegation, certainly missed out on a special moment for the UMS club.

Without a win in the regular season but several close chances UMS knew they needed to look for a win in an effort to keep their place in the premier division.

Te Awamutu Sports, who were clearly above UMS in the table and were in a fight through the later part of the regular season to avoid relegation, were expected to start as favourites.

With the fixture changed to an early time slot it appeared Te Awamutu supporters were not advised, as UMS supporters outnumbered their supporters three to one.

Throughout the week captain Alex Bradley and coaches Simpkin and Hughes had a calming influence over the squad and with great numbers there were several players unlucky not to make the final squad.

This showed what it means to UMS to keep their status and that clearly showed in the result.
