Local horses secure wins in Cup races
‘‘The most pleasing aspect of the day was to see the track running so well.
A lovely spring day and perfect track conditions made for another very successful Team Wealleans Matamata Cup race meeting on Saturday.
The day’s $50,000 feature was won by Dannevirke visitor Tyne Cot in a thrilling finish as he got up in the final few strides to down local hope Kindaleica, with another Matamata-trained runner, Vincent Street, third.
The locals did get their share of the action on the support card, however, headed by the Glenn Old-trained Eletist winning the Russell and Yvonne Green Memorial, along with Arraignment (Danica Guy), Ali Baba (Mike Moroney-Chad Ormsby), Realta (Lance Noble) and Victoryshallbemine (Graham Richardson).
Wins apart, the most pleasing aspect of the day was to see the track running so well after a win- ter beset with heavy tracks. Ideal drying conditions in the lead-up meant unhindered preparation and the result was race times right up with any run at Matamata, plus a racing pattern that allowed all runners a fair chance.
Contrary to suggestions of a supposed ‘‘on-pace’’ bias, the fact is that at least three winners – Realta, Eletist and Victoryshallbemine – got home from well back in the running. In the case of Victoryshallbemine, she was dead last with 600 metres to run in the final event and had to go around every one of her rivals as she stormed home wide out to win narrowly for Michael Coleman.
There was also a sombre tone to racing following the death last week of popular trainer Richard Coxon.
He had been a well-liked member of the racing community as well as amongst friends and neighbours in the Walton district.
Along with members of his family, Richard bred and raced the hardy gallopers Last Flight and Desert Flight, who between them won 27 races, while in more recent years he also trained the talented racemare Gurus Spirit.
Eletist (Leith Innes) storms home to grab Statham in the Russell and Yvonne Green Memorial, one of five locally trained winners on Team Wealleans Matamata Cup day.
