On be­ing con­fronted the vic­tim’s care­giver said Arthur had par­tially con­fessed, say­ing: ‘‘For a very long time I have had sex­ual prob­lems’’.

Arthur’s coun­sel Thomas Sut­cliffe said a let­ter writ­ten by the de­fen­dant to the court pro­vided ev­i­dence of re­gret and re­morse, how­ever, ‘‘there is no ques­tion he lacks insight into his ac­tions.’’

From a start­ing point of four years’ im­pris­on­ment, Judge Con­nell gave Arthur a hefty dis­count for his ex­pres­sions of re­morse and his guilty plea, which had ‘‘saved the vic­tim the trauma of reliving what had hap­pened’’ in a trial.
