Meryl wins brand new car

Meryl Clow couldn’t quite believe her luck when she scratched a ticket which revealed ‘Congratulations you have won a Ford Fiesta’.

The Matamata woman is now the owner of a brand new Ford Fiesta thanks to Variety – The Children’s Charity.

In September, Variety ran its annual Scratch ’n’ Win campaign through The Warehouse. Customers throughout the country had the chance to buy a $2 scratch ticket with all proceeds going to Variety to help provide digital devices to low-decile schools.

Meryl was very excited to see she’d won the brand new car and in fact, apart from winning a pony as a youngster, she has never won anything in her life.

‘‘I have always supported Variety and anything for children. I thought I’d scratch it at home then had to wait to get out of the carpark so scratched it there.

When I read ‘Congratulations you have won a Ford Fiesta’ I thought ‘yeah right’ and left it on the floor of the car.

‘‘When I got home I picked it up with my shopping and went inside to my husband and said ‘check this out, I think we may have won a car’. With that we copied the ticket and went to the post office still not believing it to be true.

The next morning I went to The Warehouse with my copied ticket and took them some morning tea and they confirmed, yes, we have won a new car.’’

The team at The Warehouse in Matamata, where the winning ticket was sold, was also very happy to be part of the campaign.

Store manager Alex Calder said it was great for the Matamata community to see winning can happen in the rural town.

‘‘Prizes like these can often go to the big cities,’’ he said. ‘‘We’re so delighted for Meryl.’’

Variety is proud to partner with The Warehouse on the Scratch ’n’ Win campaign.

It funds their Laptops for Learning programme, which provides digital devices to low decile schools across New Zealand.

The aim is to give young people access to digital devices as part of their in-class learning. To date, close to 1000 digital devices valued at over $530,000 have been provided nationally.
