Donate your time at the Red Cross shop

Matamata Chronicle - - Conversations - TERESA HATTAN

Please donate your time is the plea of Matamata’s Red Cross shop coordinator Claire Ashton.

The local not-for-profit charity shop has a wide range of quality donated goods, but what the store needs right now is those who have time to donate.

Benefits for those who can volunteer include giving to a local cause. The Matamata Red Cross shop provides funds for the Matamata Health Shuttle and also to Red Cross nationwide. This in turn provides disaster welfare teams and fully equipped vans. These were used after the Christchurch earthquake and recent flooding in Whanganui.

Claire said volunteering at the store could also be a pathway to paid employment.

Volunteering at the store is usually fun, Claire said, but it can get very busy. She and the team are able to find a person’s strengths, whether it be sorting, pricing or window dressing.

She said the store gives equal opportunity to everyone and currently has a diverse range of people who give of their time so freely. ‘‘Those already here are great, we’d just like a few more, especially over the holiday period,’’ Claire said.

The store could then possibly look to extend shop hours.

If you can help, pop into the shop on Arawa St or phone Claire on 880 9018.
