Group founder sees benefits of walking

Matamata Chronicle - - What’s On - ABBY BROWN

The founder of a local walking group, Kath Ockroyd, wants to encourage more people to join.

She said the Matamata group, which she started in 1986, had more benefits than just keeping the members fit and healthy. ‘‘It’s the togetherness I enjoyed,’’ she said. The social group made sure that each member is matched with someone with the same fitness capabilities so they are not left behind.

The group has also taken members places, including the South Island, Fiji, Norfolk Island and Australia. Three members competed in a 10km walk on the Gold Coast in 1993. Kath said they could only afford to be involved with these trips with support from Sport Waikato, which the group is no longer part of. Closer to home the group walked from Cambridge to Hamil- ton in one hour and minutes in 1993.

The Matamata routes enable the walkers to enjoy the trees and gardens which Kath said was a credit to the area. The group walks twice a week. On Fridays they always walk along Tom Grant Dr and on Tuesday they gather before deciding which route they will take. They meet at the pools at 9am both days.
