that.’’

While that Group One sprint remains a possibility, the Kelso stable is likely to have a runner in the Ellerslie equivalent, the Railway Stakes. A strong late finish into second by Irish Moon in last Saturday’s Concorde handicap virtually assured a start in the big New Year’s Day sprint.

The half-length margin from the winner Statham would have been less if Irish Moon not had his line taken by Statham with 300 metres to run. Connections were justified in lodging a protest but officials ruled that the winner was entitled to the gap he took ahead of Irish Moon.

‘‘Winning a $70,000 race would have been good, but by running second he escapes any penalty for the Railway, so I suppose it wasn’t all bad,’’ said Ken Kelso.

Graham Richardson also has designs on the Railway, with his unbeaten stable member Snapshot vying for a start in the $200,000 race. That target will become more of a reality if Snapshot can take his winning sequence to five from five at Te Rapa this weekend.

The five-year-old son of former classy galloper Snap needed time to reach maturity and his career has been further hindered by his abject dislike for anything but a firm galloping surface.

That has restricted his current campaign to a single start, which resulted in another easy win at Rotorua in mid-October and deepened the impression the untapped talent has made since his career began just over a year ago.

‘‘The Railway is a longshot and he’s still 25th in the starting order, but we would give it serious consideration if he was to win again on Saturday,’’ said his trainer.

Talk of holiday season racing also brings to mind Matamata’s pre-Christmas race meeting, the popular twilight meeting scheduled for next Wednesday, December 16 with the first race set to go at 3.15pm.

Various entertainment packages – including car boot spots – can still be booked by making contact with the Matamata Racing Club office at 888 8898.
