Woman takes on burglars
A Matamata woman has had a rocky start to 2016 after she was assaulted in her home by a burglar.
The woman was awake in bed around 4.45am on New Years Day when she spotted a man looking at her through her bedroom door, police said.
She told him to leave and he did so. But when she later heard noises in the living room, she got up and found a second man attempting to steal her laptop.
When she challenged him, the man dropped the computer and left the house.
As he left, the first man returned and assaulted her. The woman was not badly injured by the attack.
Police commended her bravery in challenging the burglars, but recommend anyone in a similar situation should avoid confrontation and call police.
The two burglars are still at large and police are calling for information.
One man was Maori, aged between 28 and 36. He was about 165cm tall and had big eyes, big lips and a solid build. He wore a black hoodie and blue jeans.
The second burglar was around 25, skinny, and around 185cm tall with a hunched gait. Also Maori, the younger man had a thin moustache. His hair was short on the sides and long on top, possibly with a rats’ tail at the back. He spoke with a soft voice. Anyone with any information that could help identify these men should contact Matamata police on 07 888 7117 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
