The Te Aroha and Matamata Council offices are flying the silver fern flag next to the current New Zealand flag until the second referendum between March 3-24 is complete. People will have the opportunity to view the flags flying side by side in a real-life situation before they vote in the next referendum.

Mayor Jan Barnes says that "by flying both flags it gives our community a chance to see them both flying and consider how they look before making a decision. We hope that this will help people decide on the future of the New Zealand flag."

The Flag Consideration Panel invited all councils to fly both of the flags and has made them available free of charge to councils. To assist the decision making process, councils must fly them equally and within close proximity to each other.
