Matamata man sets record at golf croquet t
Nigel Grondin wowed his Waikato/King Country teammates by winning all 10 of his singles matches at the Upper North Island Teams Event recently.
This was the first time in the event’s history that anyone had won all their singles matches. Team member Joe Beattie attributed the Matamata man’s success to his competitive edge, which had been honed through his lawn bowls background.
The outstanding result helped his team come third overall.
Grondin struggled to continue this success in the doubles, where he won two of his five matches.
Both Grondin and his doubles partner, Frances Beattie, have been playing for less than a year. Beattie said his wife had ‘‘found the going a bit tough playing more experienced, seasoned competitors’’; she won two of her 10 matches.
Beattie admitted he was disappointed with his and his teammate Peter Olson’s result in the doubles, where they won two of their five matches. In the singles Olson won five of his 10 matches and Beattie won seven of his 10.
In the singles Fisher won four and Polglase won five matches.
