Gutsy win against Pukekohe

Matamata Chronicle - - Backyard Banter -

COMAG Matamata College 1 st XV produced a gutsy performance against Pukekohe 1 st XV on the weekend, winning 16 to 15 in the first round of the Waikato – Counties 1 st XV Championship.

This is a new competition with the top four 1st XVs from last year’s Waikato 1st Division playing against four Counties 1 st XVs.

The win also saw Matamata win the Dion Muir 1 st XV Challenge Trophy which they will aim to defend against St Johns 1 st XV this weekend.

Matamata started strongly and opened the scoring with a try to winger Ben Mason.

Kieran Holdsworth kicked two penalties in the first half, while Pukekohe scored two tries making the score 11-10 at the break.

Matamata found themselves hard on defence in the second half. Ill-discipline saw two players yellow carded for Matamata, but spirited defence meant Pukekohe were kept scoreless until 5 minutes from the end, when they were able to score a try.

With time up and Matamata down 15 – 11, Matamata passed the ball wide and Holdsworth was able to score the match winning try.
